Service Charge
サービス料 · saabisuryou
Also known as: サービス料 · saabisuryou · Service Charge · 서비스 차지 · 服务费 · 服務費 · service-charge
An automatic fee added to food, drink, or service bills, typically separate from cover charges or table fees.
Service charge is a common additional fee in Japan's nightlife industry. It is automatically added to the bill at restaurants, bars, and clubs as compensation for the service provided by staff, and is typically included in the final invoice at the time of payment.
This fee is distinct from cover charges or table fees. Cover charges are for the use of the seat, and table fees often include a small appetizer, while the service charge is positioned as remuneration for the overall service provided by the staff.
The percentage varies by establishment, but generally ranges from 10% to 15% of the food and drink total. At high-end venues or membership clubs, the rate may be higher.
When paying, it is important to check whether the service charge is already included in the bill. When paying by credit card, it is often listed as a separate line item. In Japan, where tipping is not customary, the service charge effectively serves as a substitute for tips.
To avoid unexpected costs, it is advisable to confirm the service charge policy in advance by checking the venue's website or menu, or by asking staff upon entry. This is especially recommended for first-time visitors.
