Kanazawa is the capital of Ishikawa, and Katamachi in its centre is the district the prefecture's tourism site describes for nightlife. Yamashiro Onsen lies in Kaga to the south, and the fastest Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo reaches Kanazawa in 2 hours 24 minutes.

According to JNTO, Kanazawa is the prefectural capital of Ishikawa. The prefecture's official tourism site calls Katamachi and Korinbo in central Kanazawa the premier shopping districts in Ishikawa, and says Katamachi also has a vibrant, modern nightlife, with bars, pubs and clubs busy until late.
The south of the prefecture is the Kaga area, with JR Kaga Onsen Station as its hub. Yamashiro Onsen sits inland, on the other side of the station, and JNTO notes that Kaga Onsen Station is easy to reach from Komatsu Airport, which has domestic and international flights.
As a nationwide rule, Article 28 of the Entertainment Business Act bans storefront sex businesses within 200 metres of schools, libraries, child welfare facilities and similar sites, and lets prefectures designate further prohibited areas by ordinance. Check with the Ishikawa prefectural police for the areas Ishikawa's ordinance designates.
Article 28(3) exempts a business that had already filed its notification and was operating when the rule took effect or began to apply. Walk-in formats such as soaplands can operate only where the ordinance allows them.

On JR East's timetable the fastest Tokyo–Kanazawa train is Kagayaki 503 on the Hokuriku Shinkansen, at 2 hours 24 minutes. According to JR West, at the 16 March 2024 timetable the fastest trips from Tokyo were 2 hours 40 minutes to Komatsu and 2 hours 43 minutes to Kaga-Onsen.
From Kansai and Chukyo you change between a limited express and the Hokuriku Shinkansen at Tsuruga; at the same timetable the fastest trips were 2 hours 9 minutes from both Osaka and Nagoya to Kanazawa, and 2 hours 6 minutes from Osaka to Kaga-Onsen. By air, Haneda to Komatsu takes about an hour, and the Kanazawa Tourism Association gives about 40 minutes by limousine bus to Kanazawa Station.
This site divides Ishikawa into three parts: Kanazawa City, Komatsu City and Kaga City. Kanazawa City has the Kanazawa Katamachi and Kanazawa Station areas, Komatsu City has Komatsu, and Kaga City has Yamashiro Onsen.
