Saitama City, the prefectural capital in southeastern Saitama, was formed in 2001 from Urawa, Omiya and Yono. Omiya is an eastern Japan rail hub where six Shinkansen lines including the Tohoku and Joetsu call; Urawa holds the city hall.

Saitama City came into being in May 2001 when the cities of Urawa, Omiya and Yono merged. It became Japan's 13th designated city in April 2003 and absorbed Iwatsuki in April 2005, giving it its present ten wards. The city grew up as a post town on the Nakasendo highway.
Omiya Station is served by six Shinkansen lines, including the Tohoku and Joetsu, and is a junction of JR and private lines that makes it a transport hub for eastern Japan. The city hall is in Urawa ward, the administrative centre. Kita-Urawa and Minami-Urawa are the station areas immediately north and south of Urawa.
