Motomachi is part of central Kobe. The city's tourism site Feel KOBE says the Motomachi shopping street, named in 1874, grew into the city's central commercial district together with neighbouring Nankinmachi.
Feel KOBE describes the shopping street as just steps from several stations: JR Motomachi, Hanshin Motomachi, Minato-Motomachi on the Kaigan subway line, Nishi-Motomachi on the Kobe Rapid Railway, and Hanakuma. Between Sannomiya and Motomachi stations, the Piazza Kobe arcade runs for about 400 metres under the elevated tracks.
According to Feel KOBE, the Motomachi shopping street mixes shops founded more than 100 years ago with younger ones, and on Sakaemachi and Otsunaka-dori cafés and variety stores occupy retro buildings. Kobe City adds that from around Motomachi Station you can walk to Nankinmachi and the Sannomiya Center Gai.

Hyogo Prefecture's anti-touting ordinance came into force on 1 April 2015. The only Kobe zone on the prefecture's list is northern Sannomiya, so Motomachi is not a designated zone. Even outside the zones, the ordinance forbids touts from following people who have said no, and the governor can issue guidance.
