Chiba City is the capital of Chiba Prefecture, about 40 km from central Tokyo and 30 km from Narita. Its centre is around Chiba Station in Chuo ward; the other areas are Makuhari Shintoshin in Mihama ward, Inage/Hanamigawa and Wakaba/Midori wards.

Chiba became Japan's 12th designated city in 1992 and has about 980,000 residents in six wards: Chuo, Hanamigawa, Inage, Wakaba, Midori and Mihama. Chiba Station in Chuo ward is where JR, Keisei and the Chiba Urban Monorail meet, and the prefectural office, city hall and courts are gathered around it. The Narita Express from Narita Airport also stops at Chiba.
Makuhari Shintoshin in Mihama ward began with the opening of Makuhari Messe in 1989; its station is Kaihin-Makuhari on the JR Keiyo Line, and ZOZO Marine Stadium is here. West of Chiba-Minato Station in Chuo ward stands Chiba Port Tower, and the Soga district is a sub-centre of shops and offices.
