Akabane is a neighbourhood GO TOKYO describes as a residential area with a retro atmosphere on the border of Tokyo and Saitama. Alleys hung with red lanterns spread around Akabane Station, which five JR lines serve.
GO TOKYO lists the JR Utsunomiya, Takasaki, Shonan Shinjuku, Saikyo and Keihin-Tohoku lines at Akabane Station. That makes five JR lines stopping at the one station.
GO TOKYO notes that the narrow alleys around the station glow with red paper lanterns, that spots such as OK Yokocho on the east side get busy early, and that the neighbourhood traces its roots to a black market. Its nightlife page also carries a photo captioned as Akabane's drinking district.

For Kita Ward, the police list Akabane 1-chome and 2-chome and Akabane-minami 1-chome as blocks subject to the touting rule (updated 31 March 2016). Apart from the zones, Article 11 of the Tokyo ordinance does not allow three types, store-type sex businesses, reception-office businesses and store-type telephone dating businesses, to operate anywhere in Tokyo from midnight to 6 a.m.
