Tachikawa is a city in Tokyo's Tama area where department stores, large shopping complexes, offices and eateries cluster around the station. Four JR lines and the Tama Monorail reach Tachikawa.
According to Tachikawa City, JR Tachikawa Station is served by the Chuo, Ome, Itsukaichi and Nambu lines, and the Tama Monorail runs there too. GO TOKYO introduces Tachikawa as a place 30 minutes west of Shinjuku Station.
Tachikawa City itself says that department stores, large commercial facilities, offices and a wide range of eateries gather around the station, giving it the liveliest atmosphere in the Tama area. That superlative is the city's own wording, part of its description of shops and offices gathered around the station.

The police guidance gives Tachikawa City's designated blocks as Akebonocho 2-chome, Shibasakicho 2-chome and 3-chome, Takamatsucho 3-chome and Nishikicho 1-chome and 2-chome (page of 31 March 2016). In addition, Article 11 of Tokyo's entertainment business ordinance forbids late-night operation of store-type sex businesses and similar types; the banned hours run from midnight to 6 a.m. and the rule covers all of Tokyo, Tachikawa included.
