The Hikifune / Mukojima / Oshiage area lies in northern Sumida Ward, and a ward publication describes Mukojima as a hanamachi that grew from the Edo period, dotted with ryotei and old confectioners. Several railway lines link the ward.
A Sumida Ward publication lists the JR Sobu Line, the Toei Asakusa, Shinjuku and Oedo lines, the Tokyo Metro Hanzomon Line, the Keisei Oshiage Line, the Tobu Skytree Line and the Tobu Kameido Line as the lines connecting the ward.
According to the ward, the Mukojima area developed as a hanamachi from the Edo period, and ryotei restaurants and long-established Japanese confectioners are still scattered through it. The same publication describes the Mukojima and Kanegafuchi area as having two sides: Mukojima with its ryotei and sweet shops, and Kanegafuchi with tangled alleys typical of old downtown Tokyo.

Hikifune, Mukojima and Oshiage are not among Sumida Ward's designated blocks on the police list, which are in Kinshi and Kotobashi (updated 31 March 2016). As a time rule separate from the zones, Article 11 of Tokyo's entertainment business ordinance prohibits store-type sex businesses and similar types from operating from 0:00 to 6:00 throughout Tokyo.
