Kawaramachi, Kiyamachi and Pontocho are the entertainment streets on the west bank of the Kamo River in Kyoto, framed by Hankyu's Kyoto-kawaramachi Station and Keihan's Gion-shijo and Sanjo stations. This is the centre of Kyoto's night.
Kyoto-kawaramachi, the terminus of the Hankyu Kyoto Line, is the hub. Just across the river to the east is Gion-shijo on the Keihan Main Line, at the east end of Shijo Bridge, which serves as the Hankyu transfer. To the north, Keihan's Sanjo Station at the east end of Sanjo Bridge is linked by an underground passage to Sanjo-keihan on the Tozai subway line.
From Osaka, take Hankyu or Keihan. From Kyoto Station, ride the Karasuma subway line to Shijo and take Hankyu one stop from Karasuma, or take the Tozai Line to Sanjo-keihan. From any of these stations the Kamo River is the landmark to steer by.
Kawaramachi-dori is the main north-south avenue. Kiyamachi-dori runs parallel just east of it, and the narrow Pontocho lane lies closer still to the river. Pontocho is a geisha district; its Kaburenjo theatre is about three minutes on foot from Keihan Sanjo. Kiyamachi-dori is a street of restaurants and bars, and one of the places where the city has published the names of touting violators.
The business types RED LIGHT JAPAN lists here are shown in the venue list and categories on this page. Venue pages give guide prices, hours and the languages spoken.
Under Kyoto's city ordinance the Gion-Kawaramachi zone was designated a no-touting zone in 2015. All street touting, scouting and waiting for customers is banned; after guidance, a recommendation and an order, violators face a fine of up to 50,000 yen and publication of the shop's name. The city publishes the names of violators caught on Kiyamachi-dori and nearby. Do not follow anyone who approaches you; contact venues directly through the details on their listings.
